I would suggest that you read Lewis' The Abolition of Man. I suspect that you would understand better what Lewis was trying to accomplish with That Hideous Strength then.

I suppose the reader has to have a broader understanding of all the different concepts and ideas that Lewis was referencing to see how significantly much more depth there is to this book than the prior two.
